The Elementary Physical Education program in the St. Louis Public Schools follows the EPEC learning curriculum. EPEC stands for Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum. The lessons and learning experiences are research based and are aligned with the State of Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations along with the National Standards of the Association of Physical Education and Sport.
Physical Education is provided twice a week in the gymnasium for 35 minutes. The goals are intended to help students learn physical and personal/social skills to become a physically active and healthy person for a lifetime. Physical Education not only provides learning in the physical and social/emotional realms but in addition, enhances and improves academic learning in the classroom. Research proves continually that physically active people learn better and that confidence in physical skills leads to success and continued involvement in physical activities.
There is another program at Nikkari that works in conjunction with Physical Education. Our school qualifies for a program through the Gratiot Isabella Regional Education Service District entitled Food & Fitness For Families. Each year we receive support programs that supplement health and nutrition education as part of our Phys. Ed. curriculum.
