Citizen Involvement

Citizen Involvement Encouraged

The Board of Education holds general public meetings throughout the year, typically at the High School Media Center. The Board welcomes citizens at these sessions and other forums concerning educational matters of community interest. Michigan law restricts the Board’s ability to meet in closed session, and the Board strives to keep meetings as open as possible.

Public Comment

General meetings begin with public comments, an opportunity for citizens to speak for three minutes on any subject relative to SLPS except personnel or other confidential matters. Please register ten minutes before the meeting and indicate whether you represent yourself or an organization.

Planning
sessions are also open to the public and generally take place Monday mornings preceding general meetings. The Board will take public comment during planning sessions. Board members present at Board committee meetings will also take public comment at the end of those meetings. Some planning sessions may be closed to the public if they concern confidential topics such as personnel matters.

Agendas & Minutes Online

The Board makes its meeting agendas, documents and minutes available to the public. Agendas and backup information for each agenda item are typically posted the Friday before the next scheduled public meeting.
